Pain Relief With Hypnosis

Pain results in much suffering in adults and can cause depression and poor quality of life. The stats show that in the United States alone 100 million people suffer from some kind of Chronic Pain. But did you know that hypnosis can really help, with all sorts of painful conditions such as back pain and arthritis?

I get a regular referral of clients from a local G.P. and have had remarkable results. Recently a gentleman named Liam came to see me in severe pain. He was suffering from arthritis and was in pain from head to toe. After just one session he left feeling no pain whatsoever and is now a new man. Here is what Liam had to say about his experience:

“I had a wonderful experience with Trevor recently. I was in a lot of pain for years and was asked to see about hypnosis by my rheumatology consultant and I have improved a great deal since having the hypnosis. I am taking far less tablets now and I am walking better. I have no joint stiffness or any pain. It’s a wonderful feeling. I have a lot more confidence now. I came away a new man. I would highly recommend Waterford Hypnosis. Trevor is a sincere and genuine person with a wonderful gift.”

Let’s talk a little bit about understanding 'pain'. What travels through the nerves when you get an injury, is not pain, it is 'activity in the nerves'. It is only when it gets to the brain, and the brain processes it, using emotions, beliefs and expectations, that it becomes an 'experience of pain'. It is important to recognise the difference between the 'painful signals' and the 'actual suffering'. For example stress and anxiety almost always intensify the power of any pain experience. Hypnosis can help a people relax so that they can experience comfort rather than pain and helps manage the fear and anxiety people feel related to pain. It also relaxes the nervous system, so it’s not as reactive to the pain, as well as redirecting your attention away from the sensation of pain. People have actually gone through fairly serious operations using hypnotherapy and not requiring any general and/or local anesthetic. This is an example of how powerful hypnosis is.

Hypnosis is one of the most effective interventions for the reduction of pain and suffering. In recent years, it has become an increasingly more acceptable therapeutic intervention. Many studies (Ashton et al., 1997; Cadranel et al., 1994; Chaves & Dworkin, 1997; Hrezo, 1998; Lang, Joyce, Spiegel, Hamilton, & Lee, 1996; Marchioro et al., 2000; Patterson & Jensen, 2003; Van der Does, Van Dyck, & Spijker, 1988) have demonstrated that hypnosis in persons who experience pain or stress can reduce the need for pain medications. Remember all hypnosis is self hypnosis, it is very safe and you will only accept suggestions you want to accept regardless of the depth of hypnosis.

Hypnosis Works For Nail-biting

We have a new baby in the family and needless to say getting a few hours to spare to write a new hypnotic blog post has proved difficult. So when I sat down to write it I had to come up with a topic I had not yet covered. And then it popped into my head -'Nail Biting' This is a fairly common complaint and without fail every year I have a couple of clients that come to see me to solve this problem. According to the statistics and studies done on nail biting, 28-33% of children ages 7-10 years old, 44% of adolescents, 19-29% of young adults and 5% of older adults are nail biters. Nail-biting, like every other habit is formed over time as we go through life and we condition ourselves into our behaviors and habits. From the time we are born we are learning whether it be walking, talking, reading or writing, so that it becomes automatic and subconscious, i.e. without us even having to think about it. Unfortunately fears and habits like Nail-biting can also emerge. Fortunately, Hypnosis is a great way to stop any bad habits.and research results have indicated that suggestions preceded by hypnotic induction resulted in symptom improvement when it comes to Nail-biting1

The success of the treatment does very much depend on the client committing to the process (and believing it will work), following my instructions and completing the program. However the same can be said for any of the programs that I offer. I find with something like Nail-biting, that it can take a few sessions for the client to learn some techniques such as self hypnosis and anchoring a positive state to help eliminate the habit. With time the old neural pathways and triggers associated with the habit can be broken.

A few words here again about the hypnotic state (something I frequently get asked!) - Remember that it is a natural state of mind that we all have experienced at one time or another, e.g. daydreaming. It is just a nice feeling of mental and physical relaxation; It is not sleep and you will not be 'unconscious' or 'asleep', in fact it is a state of heightened focus and creativity, where your mind is open and receptive to absorb new suggestions, ideas and concepts. My clients are always in control and can open their eyes any time they wish. Thankfully so far all of my clients have enjoyed the process so much that they didn't want to open their eyes, but go deeper into the process. In other words the process is completely safe - all hypnosis is 'self-hypnosis' and is very enjoyable. I have dozens of happy clients that can verify this!

Here are a few of the testimonials I have recieved:
Fantastic, I can’t believe it, but I have not bitten my nails since. Am cutting my nails for the first time tonight. Its only great. Thanks a million. ill recommend you over and over again. - John, Tipperary

Thank you Trevor, the skin around my nails is healing well, almost immediately became concious of biting. I had bitten my nails for as long as I can remember, it was a deeply entrenched habit. - Renee, Tipperary

While the client is guided into the hypnotic state, guided imagery and visualization can be utilized to help. For example I would suggest the client see themselves in the future with their nails looking great, trimmed and neat, so that they can easily peel an orange…and then suggest ‘and how good does that feel’? Positive suggestions can be presented to the person and a new subconscious learning introduced. These are just a few of the many methods that I use to encourage the client to open up a pathway to really make the trance-formation and drop their habit. Like all my hypnosis programs, I just facilitate a process that I guide people though, sort of like a guide or instructor, leading and empowering them to achieve their goals. My Nail-biting program is 3 sessions and cost 195 euros. Call now and kick that habit out of your life, you don't want it, you don't need it, you don't have to have it!

Feeling No Pain - HypnoBirthing

Giving birth to a child is the most painful thing in the world, right? But what if I told you that didn't have to be the case? Big coming from a man I hear you say?! But bare with me for a few moments until I explain how you can have a comfortable and painless birth using 'HypnoBirthing'.

Firstly, did you know that complete body 'anesthesia' can be (and has been) induced on people in hypnosis? This means that while in the hypnotic state no pain is experienced. Hypnosis is when the body automatically reacts to suggestion, and when the correct suggestions are given by a trained hypnotic practitioner, 'anesthesia' will result. People have actually gone through fairly serious operations using hypnotherapy and not requiring any general and/or local anesthetic. Many studies have been carried out that show HypnoBirthing is effective. One study from 2004 found that women receiving prenatal hypnosis had significantly better outcomes than women who did not.1 Another in 2006 showed very beneficial outcomes associated with the use of hypnosis in childbirth.2

Lets talk a little bit about understanding 'pain'. What travels through the nerves when you get an injury, or a contraction in childbirth, is not pain, it is 'activity in the nerves'. It is only when it gets to the brain, and the brain processes it, using emotions, beliefs and expectations, that is becomes an 'experience of pain'. It is important to recognise the difference between the 'painful signals' and the 'actual suffering'.3 For example stress and anxiety almost always intensify the power of any pain experience. Hypnosis can help a woman relax so that they can experience comfort rather than pain. I teach techniques such as self hypnosis and mindfulness that are a great way of helping prepare any woman for childbirth, showing them how to focus attention away from pain.

It is also important to understand that in our society, 'civilized women' are hypnotically programmed to have substantial pain during the childbirth process. From an early age they are exposed to stories relating to how painful and difficult childbirth is. All of these stories can be ingrained in the subconscious and result in a belief system and expectation that childbirth is painful. When a pregnant woman visits a doctors office she is in a hypnotic state; Everything that the doctors says becomes part of her belief system and expectation. For example the term 'labor pains' is used frequently and many handouts and magazines in the physicians office continue to program the woman to 'expect pain' during her delivery.4

Ultimately, labor and child birth is a normal, natural and physiological process. HypnoBirthing can help condition and prepare an expectant mother to be completely relaxed, both mentally and physically, with a positive expectancy of delivery, without pain or discomfort but instead ready to enjoy one of the most wonderful times of her life.

The Importance of our 'Self Talk'

Our 'self talk' is so important, because in many respects 'we are what we tell ourselves' and we are the sum product of our thoughts and emotions. Self Talk is that voice in our head that says things like 'I can't do that'; 'I am so stressed out' or 'I hate the way I look'. We can be our own biggest critics; we can beat ourselves up a lot and run ourselves down; and by doing so we put up barriers to what we can achieve in life. We really can be our own worst enemy. In her book 'My Stroke of Insight' (Plume 2009) brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. writes "Paying attention to our self talk is vitally important for our mental health". She is correct, as poor self talk can end up resulting in low self esteem, lack of confidence, anxiety, stress, loss of energy, panic attacks and poor self image, among other things.

Most of you would have heard the old saying and it's so true "You can if you you think you can". When someone comes to see me, ideally they come in with a 'I Can' attitude, because once that happens and they commit to the hypnotic process, and follow instructions, the chances are they are going to be successful. However sometimes clients come into my office thinking and believing 'they can't' and even though I can encourage, influence and persuade, ultimately it is up to each individual to believe in themselves and in the hypnotic process. So stop telling your self you can't do something you really want to do like lose weight or stop smoking and start thinking in terms of you can and will. As my colleague Nicky Edwards rightly says "The words you use daily are becoming your destiny as you speak (literally) and so be careful with what you say, don't 'try' but 'do', focus on the positives and move forward with them".

Hypnotherapy is a fantastic way of helping people control their thoughts and emotions and changing your self talk from a negative pattern to a positive. It is a great way of training yourself to think more positively and to look at things from new perspectives. I help my clients replace unwanted thought patterns by teaching them tools and techniques such a self hypnosis and mindfulness. Hypnotherapy is a relaxing, natural, and safe, form of therapy that involves an interactive process that communicates with the subconscious mind where negative self-talk occurs. I also provide my clients with hypnotic reinforcement in the form of either an audio MP3 file or a CD for use in between sessions.

I will leave you this time around with an exercise that could change your life.  Emile Coue was a french psychologist who believed that most mental and physical illness was a result of a person’s thinking. Around a century ago he coined the phrase 'Everyday In Everyday I Am Getting Better And Better', which can be referred to as either an 'autosuggestion' or an 'affirmation'. Repeat this wonderful autosuggestion/affirmation to yourself five times just before you go to sleep at night or when you wake up in the morning. It is important however that you 'believe' it and say it to yourself with emotion. It is also important to draw up a 'to do' list or a 'plan' of how you can make the autosuggestion work. Give it some time and you might be really surprised with the results! It is an empowering method of using your mind to help yourself in a very positive and uplifting way, as well as counteracting any negative self talk. It might be 100 years old but it still works!
